I Can Spell!

At 22mths, Ying Ying could read aloud on her own. And now at 30mths, Ying Ying can read English sub-titles on television programmes and... SPELL! :)

It all started when I bought a set of alphabetical stickers last Thursday after my haircut. The following day, Ying Ying threw a big tantrum about something trival I couldn't remember. I happened to see the stickers and decided to use that to distract her. It worked wonderfully and she turned quiet. I showed her the stickers and sang the ABC song to her. Then I got her to find the letters of her and her sister's name and paste them in one of her storybooks. Out of impulse, I challenged her to spell her name without looking at her book. Initially, she needed some prompting and I allowed her to take several peeks. After a few more practices, she could actually remember how to spell her own name without referring to the book though she couldn't really recall her sister's.

Ying Ying is truly blessed with a remarkable memory. So said her preschool teachers too. They were impressed she could get all the words tested on her right even though she doesn't seem to be paying much attention or responding to them during class time. Husband now thinks the Letterland syllabus taught in her preschool is perhaps too easy for her (probably that is why she doesn't show much interest in their teaching). I joked saying there is no point advancing so fast academically, citing The New Paper article on the Malaysian Cambridge Math prodigy who was rumoured to have turned into a prostitute.

But seriously speaking, as parents, we have the responsibility to help develop this special gift of hers. The question now is how. I don't believe in stressing kids out unnecessarily but if she shows the readiness to learn beyond her age, why not prep her for it?
