Goodbye, Simmons! :(

We went back to our Punggol flat last Sunday, intending to do a bit of cleaning up since the last time we did so was more than 2mths ago before the CNY. To our horror, we found the surface of our Simmons Canterbury bed infested with greenish-black moulds and fungus!!!!! So disgusting!!! The growth had been hidden in between the pillows and the bedsheets - that was why we had not noticed it during the past few visits. The damage was so bad that even the Simmons mattress beneath the sheets was not spared. To think the expensive mattress (which cost us no less than 3k) was supposed to have anti-bacterial properties. All a sales gimmick! :(

Before the appalling discovery, husband saw a fat lizard scuttering away from the bed when he switched on the bedroom light. So he said lizards might have been urinating on the bed in our absence, leading to the development of moulds and fungus. We made a big mistake of closing all the windows in the house after every visit. Thought it would prevent the dust from coming in. For goodness sake, we even drew all the curtains and the blinds! How foolish of us! Think the combination of a lack of ventilation, indoor humidity and the darkness that had encouraged the growth of moulds and fungus on our bed. Even our Lorenzo leather couch in living room was not spared. But because it was in dark brown, the stains weren't as obvious as the white mattress and cream bed frame.

The thought of a decomposing mattress irked husband so much that he wanted to get rid of the mattress immediately. He claimed he could carry the king-sized mattress down to the rubbish dump all by himself. But I was quite reluctant to part with the bed for it had served us well for the past 4.5 years. So I told him to hang on - perhaps the professional cleaners could do something to save our bed. Husband was sceptical and declared he was never going to sleep in it even after cleaning because it simply couldn't be cleaned.

Anyway, I was quite adament about keeping the mattress and so I called up a reputable cleaning company yesterday to enquire. Unfortunately, they said there is no way they could guarantee the complete eradication for cases like this because the surface may appear clean but inside may not be so. So they advised us to throw the mattress instead of spending the unnecessary money to try to clean it. Looks like the mattress will have to go. :(

Actually, the bed frame (which cost us close to 1k) is not so bad because we can do a thorough wipe down since it is made of leather. But why would we wanna keep the frame unless we plan to get another mattress right? Husband is refusing to buy a new mattress because we had bought a Sealy Jade for our move over to my in-law's place only last December. We didn't move the Simmons from Punggol because we felt it was a hassle to call the movers and besides, we had wanted to go back and sleep over occasionally. (Bad move!)

Now that I think about it, we have actually bought not two but THREE beds in the past 5yrs. I totally forgot about the other Simmons we bought to put at my in-laws' place before our wedding. They had wanted us to get a brand new "matrimonial" bed (i.e. no one has slept in it kind) for auspicious reasons. But later, we gave my in-laws the bed because we rarely slept in it (since we were stationed at Punggol then) and the springs in their 10-yr-old mattress were not longer good enough to support their backs.

This means we have spent a total of about 11-12k on the three beds!!! Unbelievable, isn't it? We are terrible with our finance management - no wonder we don't have much savings till now. Though we strongly believe in investing in a quality mattress for a good night's sleep, spending on THREE quality mattresses is too much lah. We must be more prudent when comes to major expenditure like this in future. Well, take this as a lesson learnt!
