Child of Our Time

I am so glad the highly acclaimed BBC series Child of Our Time is showing again on Arts Central (every Thursday, 10pm). I remember catching the weekly episodes weeks before and after darling's birth. In fact, I was so impressed by the programme that I actually bought the book on it! :)

This week's episode basically talks about how nurture (environment) can influence intelligence. Summary: Need to expose children to varied experiences (e.g. swimming) and give them adequate attention (e.g. play with them instead of leaving them in the playpens).

However, the part which left the most impression on me was seeing how James' mother did batch freezing. She was explaining to the crew how she had prepared a big pot of nutritious mashed potato, carrots and other veggies for James. The shocking part came when she took out a big plastic bag (not unlike our NTUC type) and pour the whole mushy stuff in. She then tied the plastic bag and put it in the chest freezer. I doubt she had washed the plastic bag. Also, that kind of plastic bag is very thin and not suitable for freezing. I also wonder if she is going to thaw the entire bag (and re-freeze the rest) when she is serving it to James.

This is a sharp contrast from the way I do my batch freezing using ice-cube trays (with covers) and freezer bags. But anyway, James is still alive and kicking. His body must be immune to all the bacteria already. Point? Maybe sometimes I shouldn't be over paranoid about hygiene matters for Ying Ying!
