Watermelon

Ying Ying is nearly 11mths now and it was long overdue for her to try eating some finger food on her own.

Last Friday, I cut some small watermelon cubes for Ying Ying to try. However, when I offered them to her on a plate but she attempted to flip the entire plate over! So I decided to wash her highchair tray clean and put the watermelon pieces directly on it. Then with a slow and exaggerated motion, I demonstrated to her how to eat it and praised how sweet and delicious the watermelon was.

But alas, our picky eater was not convinced. She merely picked up the pieces and squashed them in her hands! Some of the pieces even dropped onto her chair. Messy, messy! So I decided to shove a tiny piece into her mouth. Initially, I thought she had swallowed it whole - she still didn't know how to chew yet. (Photo above taken when the watermelon piece was still in her mouth!)

Unfortunately, my happiness was shortlived for after a looong while, she finally spitted it out the piece - flattened and juiceless! I wanted to give another piece to her but she started to yawn and got cranky. In the end, I ate up all the watermelon.

Ah well! Never mind... I guess she was not used to self-feeding. I should give her more practice instead of spoonfeeding her all the time which is soooo tiring! Hmm...maybe I should let her experiment with some finger food during her actual mealtime. (Aiyo! So common sensical - why didn't I think of it before?) Will let her try other types of finger food too. Papaya and banana are next on the list. Heheh... :D
