I finally got down to making some fruit purees for meimei last week. I used to make a lot of these for Ying Ying when she was younger - apple, pear, plum, mango, avocado etc. and then freeze them for use. But with meimei, I tend to do more of mashing up soft fresh fruits like banana and papaya. To broaden her tastebuds, I decided I neededto start pureeing again.
Plum Puree
Full of anti-oxidants and especially good for preventing constipation since meimei is now eating brown rice full time. I use Fancl germinated rice (which seems to be more nutritious than plain rice) to cook her porridge and I am happy she is eating well. I serve her one cube a day after one of her meals. So far, so good. meimei doesn't seem to be too keen on it though, probably because of its sourness but I think she will get used to it eventually, like how Ying Ying did!
Looks red? I used black plums!
Method: Cut into half then twist to remove the seed. You may leave skin on for more fibre. Put to steam without water till soften. Then blend it up with its liquid and pour into ice-cube tray. When frozen, take them out and store into ziplock so that the trays can be re-used again. 1 box of black plums can make 1.5 trays of puree. I saw some red plums on sale too. I wonder which is more nutritious - black or red?? Any idea?
Mango Puree
Mango puree tastes great when mix with mashed avocado (I made some of that already heheh). Ying Ying used to like mango-avocado puree when she was younger and she used to eat a lot of these as dessert for one period of time but now our fussy friend finds all purees yucky. I like to use the more expensive honey mango from Thailand (introduced to me by good friend helen) because I love its sweetness. Unfortunately, the ones I bought from Cold Storage were a tad too sour. :/ Hope the avocado will neutralise the sourness.
Smooth and creamy ~ yummy!
Method: Similar to plum puree except you need not steam the mango. Just scrap out the mango flesh and blend it all up and pour into trays. 2 honey mangoes can make about 1.5 trays of puree. Simple eh? But I had a hard time scrapping the flesh off the seed cos it was so slippery. I wonder if there is a better way to do it. Any suggestion?
